John grew up in Minneapolis where he excelled in track and cross country in high school. Other hobbies and interests included collecting antiques, refinishing furniture, fine art and music, woodworking, and traveling. During the summers she helped area families with small children and babies. Dick grew up in Des Moines and attended Roosevelt High School where he graduated in 1950.
